'Terminator Genisys' Is A Flop No More - 4th highest China opening of all time.

i guess the love for Pacific Rim comes with the attitude of its director Guillermo del Toro. he's a huge anime fan, he's a nerd, he's "one of us" and he "gets" the source material he's using, so his movies automatically get more credibility. and with that in mind you can see how many little details are made with love and with enthusiasm. basically a fanboy making movies for fanboys.

And while i'm one of the people who actually liked the first three Transformers movies i can totally understand why so many people hate them.
First of all, Michael Bay is a total dickhead and he gives a shit about you knowing that. Also Michael Bay gives a shit about the source material. And the Transformers have a pretty big fanbase, so that's not a good point to start with.
And Michael Bay makes blockbuster movies like he's reading instructions from a "how to make blockmuster movies for dummies" book. if you know just a little something about movies or if you have seen some movies in your life, you can tell that it's generic filmmaking at it's best. you get the relatable human main-character, the pretty sidekick-girl for some eyecandy, the alien-heroes that look cool and alieny but are very human and also relatable, some stupid jokes for the comic relief and the generic evil villain. generic story, impressive action-shots with messy CGI and some explosions, there you go, instant profit, shit turned to gold.

I haven't seen the new Terminator yet but it's kind of the same. They try to profit from the nostalgia but it's missing the heart of the first two Terminator movies. The first two movies were huge milestones in filmmaking and James Cameron is someone who knows his craft, and like him or not, he always gives more than 100% and everything he makes is pushing the boundaries of filmmaking. dude gets his hands on a already loved and respected film like "Alien" from a respected director like Ridley Scott and instead of shitting on it, he totally owns it and makes his own vision without disrespecting or ruining the original.
he makes a movie about the titanic and instead of annoying us with shitty CGI shots he BUILDS THE WHOLE FUCKING SHIP like he's trying to resurrect it, only to make it sink again, so he can make an actual documentation about it. and when, as you think that's it, Cameron achieved all he could, there's nothing more to come, this guy comes up with a shitty Pocahontas story and some blue smurf-aliens and single-handedly introduces 3D to the world. nobody gave a shit about 3D before Avatar and then - BOOM - 3D everything. of course nothing ever looked as good as Avatar after that, but it's a huge achievement for James Cameron that he made that happen. And why does he do that? Enthusiasm. He actually gives a shit about what he does.

It all depends on the enthusiasm. what's the difference between the new Terminator and Jurassic World? The enthusiasm of it's director. You can see how much love Colin Trevorrow had for the original Jurassic Park movies and that's what makes the nostalgia work. You can see how much enthusiasm was behind the production, you can tell if the people actually care about what they make or if they only want to get the job done to grab your money.

same with people like J.J. Abrams and Star Wars, James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy or Joss Whedon and Avengers. Your movies don't need to be masterworks, but enthusiasm gives you a huge boost in credibility and that's what makes it work.
