In terms of Painting, you get what you pay for.

I am not going to pay someone a premium to do the job professionally, which is expected. Thats literally your job and you act like its a bonus. Its a bullshit excuse to price gouge. Its why ALL homeowners need to get multiple quotes. And go with referrals if possible from friends or family.

With that said, it can be an expensive mistake to hire someone who does a shit job and that job will have to be fixed, even though you are spending less initially. But that doesnt mean the more you spend the better job you get. Its sad that people view the world this way. Its why many contractors exist to compete for business.

Dont use the highest or lowest bid. Find a licensed contractor who comes across honest and hire them. Look up bbb to see if complaints were filed recently. Read reviews. Do all you can to research your contractor before hiring. Ask for portfolio that show previous work. Ive even asked for contacts of previous clients so I can call them and ask how their experience was. If you get resistance during any of this the contractor has issues and I would avoid.

Also, Dont pay full up front. I like to do 1/3 at a time. If at the end when they say they are finished and there are issues I will not pay until they fix it. No homeowner will ever lose in court if you can provide pictures to bring to court with you. Most honest contractors will return to fix it because they want you to refer them to friends. The rest are scumbags and you will have to either fix yourself or hire again and spend even more money.

But to try and justify a high price above and beyond fair market value is bullshit imo.
