This Is a Terrible Way to Pick a President — The case for reforming the Democratic primary process.

I think ranked choice can be a fine option for the general, but I think there is a strong case for approval voting in the primary. You get a ballot and put a check next to everyone you'd show up to vote for in November.

IRV can still have spoilers that means it doesn't necessarily generate a unity candidate the way you might expect it to. A candidate that is everyone's second choice but no one's first can't survive in IRV, even though strategically, that might be the best person to send to the general.

There's also the question of ballot simplicity. Who in the 23 odd candidates running in the Democratic primary was your 17th choice? This can actually have an impact on the election so the question isn't as silly as it might seem.
