Yeah...the actual asking out part...that's the kicker, right. what helped me was to basically have a mental roadmap of what I wanted to go down. I actually even wrote it all down and then mentally rehearsed it constantly. It's nerdy and weird, but hey it worked. I literally pictured myself laughing and having a good time with someone who liked all the weird shit i liked and suddenly finding myself going out with them.

You could also cop out and ask your friends to set you up with someone good. That actually worked pretty well for me once. The problem is people will set you up with who they think you should go out with, so it's hit or miss.

This stuff worked for me back when I was dating. I'm alone now for various reasons (taking care of family, work responsibilities), but I remember those days when I was so scared and not knowing where to start. Good luck! and update us when you hit it big! :-)
