Terrified to move into student house

Here's some tips on how to survive the mean streets of wherever you are:

  • Get an eyedrop tattoo and carry a large zombie knife

Er, ignore that. Lets try again:

  • Don't start arguments with your neighbours or piss people off in your area. Be polite and friendly and respectful, (but don't get too friendly or it can paradoxically could make them see you as a target).

  • Don't walk around looking like a person with lots of valuable things to steal. You don't need to be texting people as you walk down the road, so keep that £1000 smart phone in your pocket. Same with those expensive ear buds you have, you can go a few minutes not listening to tunes. Furthermore, farting about on a phone and blasting music in your ears simply makes you extremely unaware of your surroundings and a perfect target to be mugged. Wear unfashionable/worn clothes so you don't look like you're loaded.

  • Don't walk around looking nervous and scared (arms folded, eyes fixed to the pavement, walking 20 miles an hour) but don't start eyeballing people or swaggering around like billy big bollocks. Just walk a normal pace and eyes forward, arms by your side. Oh, and as weird as it sounds, eating something as you walk down the street (like an apple or a pastie something) kind of makes you look more comfortable and natural in an environment. Outsiders are more of a target than people who "belong".

  • Don't talk about or show your possessions to anyone who you don't fully trust. People talk and word gets round. Even if you tell a "normal" person you own a gaming computer, that normal person will tell their "less normal" friend. People pay attention to these things and they do indeed talk about about shit you wouldn't expect them to.

  • Avoid going out at night. Avoid going out alone. Avoid back alleys and shortcuts.

  • If you are accosted by anyone more scary than an old granny at a bus stop, don't stop walking. Just don't. If you stop, they'll square up to you and/or form a circle around you and then it's gonna go south. Don't give them that opportunity and just keep moving. Run if necessary. Equally, avoid responding to them with anymore more than "no" or "sorry" or other short, basic answers. The more you react and acknowledge them, the more they will pursue you.

Bottom line, keep to yourself and don't draw attention to yourself.

Oh, and don't bring lots of possessions with you. You don't need them, you just want them.

Nobody is gonna attack you or burgle your house if they think there is nothing to gain by doing it, so don't give them reason to think there is something to gain by doing it.
