Tesla Lease Payments

From a pure payments amount standpoint, leasing a Tacoma is great because of the extremely high residuals (I’ve seen 82% on 36 month leases which is inane). This means you’re only paying 18% deprecation plus money factor (interest), and taxes on this amount only (depending on your state) over the 36 months.

They’ve gotten less advantageous recently though because you used to be able to sell the truck to a dealer at any point in the lease and usually make a few thousand. I’ve done that twice.

Now, most if not all lease companies have an “individual buyout” and “dealer buyout” that’s marked up like $5K to disincentivize this. As a result most dealers stopped buying leased cars to avoid the headache. Having to actually buy, register, and pay taxes on a vehicle to flip it is too much hassle.
