Thanking God for something a human clearly did is a massive insult to that person.

  1. There is no actual evidence that "God" created them.
  2. If God created the doctors and is given credit for their actions when they are successful then is God also given "credit" (ie blame) when the doctors are unsuccessful?
  3. On this view, God created every murderer and rapist as well. Should the murder and rape also be considered God's work?

To answer questions 2 or 3 with a simple "no" constitutes the logical fallacy called special pleading. If it can be shown that there is some justification for why "God" would not get credit for the bad things, then this wouldn't be special pleading. In my experience the typical response usually appeals to some other fictional creature like a devil. This allows the interlocutor to avoid the obvious special pleading accusations. One big issue with this common response is that it just muddles the situation further with more untestable ad hoc "hypotheses" which serve no purpose other than to provide an unsatisfactory deus ex machina for the ethical nature of whatever current "God" is being discussed.
