Thanks for your help. Finally published my book!

Well done! It's very satisfying to have completed a book, makes all the hard work finally seem worth while.

RE: an ISBN - You don't need one for an eBook. It's nice to have one, it makes the work seem more real and professional but it's not a necessity. You will need one for a print version though, it uniquely identifies that edition and binding.

If you really want one, there are a few ways to get one.

  • Createspace - There are various options. You can get one for free but Createspace will be the assigned 'publisher' or there are different payment levels for alternatives.
  • Smashwords - They offer a free ISBN, again they will be assigned as 'publisher'. However, your work needs to be accepted to the Premium Catalogue to qualify.
  • Your national ISBN agency - If you're in the US this will be Bowker, or Nielsen if you're in the UK.
  • Me - I offer individual ISBNs and barcode graphics (PM me for details if you're interested).

One thing to bear in mind, unless you go direct to the ISBN agencies (which is prohibitively expensive for one-offs) whoever you buy from will be listed as the 'Publisher'. This doesn't mean anything with regard to ownership of your book, they don't own the copyright or anything like that, it's merely an identifier as to who initially purchased the ISBN. Think of it like the registrar when you buy a website domain, they wouldn't own your site, it's just who you bought the domain from.

With regard to feedback, if you're really serious about publishing your book it will be worth getting some people other than friends and family to read it and give you their opinion. F&F won't be reliable and will only say nice things, aa stranger will be brutally honest allowing you to make your book better. Just something to bear in mind.

If you need any advice or help with anything let me know, I'm happy to help.
