NPR did a story on this recently and, curious to see a picture of the mask/face myself, I did some research. There’s a theory that L’Inconnue de la Seine (“the unknown woman of the Seine”) was actually a Hungarian performer by the name of Ewa Lazlo, initially thought to have committed suicide, but later thought to have been murdered by her lover. The known photo of Ewa Lazlo does indeed look strikingly similar to the death mask made of the drowned woman. Here’s a link to more information: Possible identity of L’Inconnue de la Seine
