Hey OP I've been living in NH since 2003.

I think I'm starting to realize it's not perception, every generation has been getting taken down a peg in terms of economic power and mobility since at least 1990.

People get lazier regardless of the economy; the geniuses at the top are smart enough to appeal to people's lower base emotions instead, so everyone just blames themselves for being lazy or having no discipline relative to generations before.

My father could have dropped out of high school at any point any year, walked across town, and got a full-time job at the lowest wage and still afford an apartment, car, and downpayment for a future home...and that's while SINGLE.

Today I have a professional career as a psychologist and fitness/nutrition coach, and I can't afford an apartment AND a car on my own, despite literally having no debt and being an above average wage earner (ahead of parents by almost double). Even with a roommate I can't afford a down payment on a home without a side gig, and as inflation creeps, that seems less and less worthwhile.

Enjoy the decline!
