"Their living conditions are unsanitary! We must remove all their possessions from the sidewalk! They cannot stay here!"

Thank you for sharing. I think I understand your perspective better now. I agree with you, too. I think you’re saying for every action, there’s a consequence. It isn’t like we have unlimited resources. Someone, someone is giving up something for another person to have something. I see that as a valid concern. No easy answers for sure.

I think the only place we differ is in the cost benefit analysis example of sometimes, not being worth it to help someone. I think that’s very subjective because obviously, some groups or people are going to prioritize things differently than others & conflicting values might be assigned by different groups. I think that’s something we can work on; letting it be ok for different groups to value different outcomes.

When they bump up against one another, though, I don’t think economic worth needs to be the sole determinant of a humanitarian issue. I’m not saying you said that, just saying, in general, we choose to pass on a lot of opportunities in education, healthcare, etc because of monetary cost. We can educate people on other factors to be considered & see if that influences their support after the cost benefit analyses show impact on those non monetary issues.
