theneedledrop: Punk Isn't Coming Back (Just Cuz the President Sucks) Thoughts?

[music] doesn't repeat itself.

It absolutely does. There aren't any new forms of music, everything is rehashing what's been done. I'm curious what genres/artists you think are cutting edge and totally original.

It's tough to be invested in a genre that really had its prime before I was born

it's prime was in 1977. It "came back" again during the 80's and once more in the 90's. You're too young. You have a limited scope of experience (no offence, dude). I didn't find it difficult as a teenager in the 90's to become invested in bands that broke up before I was born. I don't really understand how you got the idea in your head that kids will only like contemporary music - You sure seem to have an appreciation for bands long gone, after all.

I like loud-ass guitars, and yelled vocals, and fast tempos. It's a sound I like--however, I'd never expect it to come back. It's just not the thing anymore.

Well good news man, it hasn't actually gone anywhere. :)

I don't know to what you young'uns are referring. Even at it's most popular in like 98-2003/4, it was never "the" thing. It was a popular thing, sure, but it was still the counter culture and it was the bands that really straddled the line between pop rock and punk rock that were "big"; never the firmly, both feet in punk bands. The scene itself thumbed its nose at the big acts, like Blink-182 or Good Charlotte. They were mocked as appropriating punk "culture" but not really being sincere about it.

This whole idea that punk rock was ever mainstream is a myth. It didn't happen. What happened is that it got just big enough that a lot of bands were finally able to make a living touring and that hasn't really changed.
