You’re right, in general, that our food supply is a mess.

However, in this case specific case though, a pitless avocado is not really a sign of a mess-up. It’s a frequent, natural occurrence in avocados. One way to think of it is: every fruit is an offspring of the plant. Countless offspring are produced each year, and each offspring is slightly different in its own way. But, because we all have smartphones and get on Reddit, we take photos of the few oddballs and never share the millions of boring normal food — making it seem like everything’s messed up. It’s the same as finding two bananas inside a banana, or a twin onions inside an onion, and yes, the occasional apple, avocado, mango, etc., will not have seeds or pits in it.
