Why is there such a negative stigma around financing cars?

Coworker of mine bought a Mazda 3 within the first month of working here. Then he traded it in because people were making fun of him for driving a girl car then he got stuck in the snow in the parking lot. Rolled over that underwater loan into a pretty basic ram 1500. Owed 60k on a 35k truck that was actually in his girlfriends name. Then they split up and she couldn't afford the truck on her own so he traded it in on a fully loaded 1500 Ram Sport but his credit was good enough to get it solely in his name now. But now he owes 85k on a 45k truck that's only worth 35k now, all this happened in 3 years and he's back with the girl now.

He finally has his head out of his ass and I believe is down to owning less than 50k and actually has some savings now and cut out a lot of his other pointless expenses and doesn't let his gf spend his money anymore.

At one point he told me he's never had more than 5k in his account for more than a day, when some of our paychecks are that much in take home pay...
