Why is there a third wave?

Firstly, there no way to know which variant it is unless all samples are sequenced, which is impossible at the moment purely based on the volumes. Delhi did sequencing on samples on one day and 80pc of them were omicron. So when the news says only xxxx are Omicron, interpret it keeping this in mind.

Secondly, vaccinations do not stop the infection. It just gives you immune system a head start so that so that it can identify the virus and generate antibodies sooner. This in turn helps reduce the severity of the infection.

The surge is primarily being driven by Omicron across the world. Omicron has been found to be more transmissible than Delta and that could be the reason why it's spreading so fast. In addition, I do not think we have had such ease of restrictions ever since March 2020, so even more chances of people catching it. The spike in India could also be driven by new years , remember most places didn't have restrictions until after New year's.
