These Alaskans on unemployment say they did what officials asked — but the state still wants them to pay back some benefits

My family is in this boat too, luckily though we only received one unemployment check. Essentially my husband was laid off due to covid-19 related lack of business.

Three weeks later his employer says there was actually a mistake and he shouldn't have been let go. They realized this when they were about to file his official paperwork showing he was no longer working there. So even though he was technically unemployed for three weeks and did not work, because his employer never officially put that on their books it looks like he was employed.

My husband even managed to reach the unemployment office and explain the situation and the worker told him that it was no problem and that he would not have to pay it back because he was not working for those three weeks due to being laid off. Since then we have gotten monthly letters from the state of Alaska asking us to pay our one unemployment check back every month. My husband's work says they are going to sort it all out, but they have also been saying that since July now. If they don't get it figured out soon we will probably try to contest it.
