One saving grace, I think, is that the way Filipinos pronounce their /h/ is different from the way the Japanese do theirs...

But yeah, there's quite a lot of things in Japanese that only start to click once you recognize the parallel thing in Filipino (that doesn't exist in English.)

Like how "elder brother" and "elder sister" are so clunky in English, but "kuya" and "ate" aren't. And of course, the almost trivial しょうゆ（醬油）→ toyo translation.

I'm sure there are others but those the ones off the top of my head. It certainly helps that Filipinos are slightly closer to them in culture (as compared to Europeans and Americans).
