Thinking about going to college to become a data scientist. Have a few questions.

Am a data analyst, work with data scientists (in practice doesn't tend to be a lot of role difference day to day where I work).

Atleast where I currenty work (business & HR data, analytics team).

  1. Although all of the component outputs are numerical (graphs, summary statistics, model outputs etc.) Most of the work involves data manipulation and programming (R or Python), rare to do any formal mathematics.

  2. Normal day is working on the latest commission, e.g. building a pipeline to clean the data, or building the deliverable (dashboard, model, report etc.). All in R or Python.

Could be quite a different story at a cutting edge org doing deep-learning or something though... I don't know.
