Thinking of moving to Cincinnati this summer, what do I need to know about this city?(Sidebar not much help)

The OTR crime narrative is complicated and often overblown. EVERY crime in OTR makes the news; similar or worse crimes that happen out in the suburbs don't get the same attention. First, OTR has been getting better and better for the last 10 years. Second, most of the victims of crime are/were involved in criminal activity. Now the problem is that it costs too damn much to move there. If you're looking to avoid crime, stay away from Avendale and Bond Hill.

Walkability depends on where you settle. Good places include Mt Adams, Walnut Hills, OTR, Clifton, Fairmount, Northside, College Hill. Really, any of the major neighborhoods in the city limits typically have a "core" and a "main street". Do yourself a favor and lookup "cincinnati neighborhoods" to get a lay of the land.

Also, don't count out northern Kentucky. There are some fabulous neighborhoods over there that are within 5 miles of downtown Cincy.

As for renting: I have no idea. Does Zillow provide enough info on that question?

Geek culture? I'm too old for that. I was a geek before it was cool. Politically we're all over the map but generally a little more conservative.

Cincinnati is praised for its urban park system and has some of the best public spaces you can find. Cincinnati Public Library is highly regarded. Cincinnati Zoo is highly regarded. Kings Island is loved by many if that's your thing. If you're prone to alergies, life's a bitch but that kinda goes for anywhere east of the Rockies. The food scene is great and the beer scene is second to none in the midwest. There's and endless amount of stuff to do within a day's drive.

The Internet situation could be better. There are pretty much two choices: Time Warner or Cincinnati Bell. Please Google Fiber, save us.

On a hot summer day it's pretty hard to beat going to the Ludlow-Bromley yacht club and drinking a cold one.
