Those who have successfully negotiated a starting salary, how did you do it?

Most recently, they made me an offer based on HR policies and where my years of experiences would place me in their range. Then added they needed to keep it equal on the team so my salary was on par with what others on my team make.
I said no to that offer. Don’t be afraid to say with confidence.
I was being head hunted for this position because I had more experience than their internal staff. The organization would also not be investing in my training as they did internal staff. To me, the salary offer should have accounted for those things instead of telling my they wanted me on par with others.
Maybe it was arrogant! But hey, you got to look out for your best interest.
