To those of you who’ve gone through both the puppy & adolescent stage

Honestly I think I have it easy compared to what I read and I don't mean that as bragging. My 10mo American Bulldog has peed inside since we got him at 8 weeks maybe a dozen times and pooped inside a handful of times at the most.

We never crated him so he free roams. He did chew our sofa cushion a couple times and will if we don't block it off but other than bursts of energy, he listens incredibly well, never barks at other animals, or shows signs of aggression towards anything. However he does get noticeably more excited when around smaller dogs and given he is over 60lbs already, I don't trust him to play with them.

There was a point a few months back that he did get aggressive in a overly playful manner with me and my wife on a few occasions. He would bark at us randomly and try grabbing at our hands or lunging at us with his front paws. I ended up getting a electric collar after he grabbed my arm one night and hurt my wife the same morning, left scratches. The colar has a sound and vibrate feature which is why I got it. I dont use the electric part unless absolutely necessary which has only been 4 times on a low setting and I started using it when he got in those moods. Give the command, if he didn't listen I press the button for the beeping sound, if he still doesn't listen I vibrate the collar followed by the command again and it's works 95% of the time when repeated religiously. Never give a command your not willing to follow up with, it sets you and the dog up for failure.

I also started walking him daily anywhere from 1 to 3 miles. His attitude completely changed a week after I started that. Way more calm, way more open to training and obedience commands, and most importantly the aggressive behavior stopped except maybe 1 episode a month that last a few minutes.

I make it a point to drive him to different parks and trails to walk him so we don't both get bored and he can experience other environments and stresses to get used to them. I can't stress this enough. My pup would panick slightly when walking at night in the city because of the loud cars and all the nightlife noises. So I switched to walk him more at night and now it doesn't both him at all. Same goes for the opposite, I took him to a state park last week in a nicer town and the people there wanted to interact with him, pet him, talk to him and he got to see other dogs being walked and said hi to a couple. That doesn't happen where we live. That interaction is important.
