Those whose parents had them at an older age, what differences did you notice how they raised you vs how those with younger parents were raised?

my brother is only 5 years younger than me. parents were in early 30s when they had me/ mid-late 30s with him. but there are stark differences between how we were raised. (oldest kid whine/rant!)

  • I was made / at least strongly encouraged to go to church every Sunday. they had pretty much stopped going by the time my brother came around.

  • they were markedly less financially stable (debt collectors calling all the time, dad working weird shifts, etc) when I was coming up. father made six figures by the time brother was being raised.

  • I had the standard chores/allowance kind of upbringing where you earn your keep. he gets handed money.

  • I was expected to stick with activities -- he quit playing soccer, a sport he was genuinely very skilled at, in high school & got no shit for it whatsoever

  • I was told we couldn't afford expensive extracurriculars or class trips. His marching band program costs them thousands in tuition and airfare, and while they ARE better off financially than they used to be, that's more than they can really afford.

  • He got a speeding ticket within a WEEK or so of getting his license -- nothing. He also got a new car pretty soon after turning 16. I got a shitty Camry w/ 3 previous owners that broke down constantly, and I wasn't allowed to drive it to school for at least the first year or so

he's not a bad kid, and I love him, but I'm ultimately kind of glad I got a harder time when we were kids. I'm more driven than he is & have - in a lot of ways - gotten into less trouble
