I Thought I Understood the American Right. Trump Proved Me Wrong.

I believe there are other things like lower taxes, less government, and personal responsibility that are a part of their platform and are the main reason for some voters.

I don't want to write an essay but if you believe this you're falling for propaganda. Those are all buzzwords that have no connection to what Republicans actually do when they are in office.

They don't lower taxes. Bush lowered taxes, and someone making 50k,

Trump repeatedly said that he would increase the size of out military, and promised to build a ridiculous wall. They don't want smaller government, they just want to shift money from helping those at the bottom domestically and internationally, to protecting them when starving people show up at their door.
Personal responsibility is a meaningless buzzword. They are in favor of any government handout that they perceive as going to mostly white people. Welfare was a huge hit with white people when black people were unable to get it, and as soon as black people got it too, myths about black welfare queens caused it to lose popularity.

They oppose any gun restrictions, but when the Black Panthers started carrying them, Governor Reagan was quick to sign the Mulford act to ban open carry.
