"When I was your age..." can be a parent telling how things were for them, and understanding both how it's different for you and what you share.

Your story could just as easily end in "... but obviously times have changed. Of course you can live at home after high school so you can save money. Maybe we can make a plan so if you save X amount, we'll match it and help you get a downpayment on a house. Back in my day, I bought this house when I was on unemployment! Can you believe that?"

I wish my parents had talked more about their lives. So much has changed and it's important to note those things. And so much has stayed the same, for better or for worse.
