Thoughts on Farcry 5

FC4 is my favorite but I loved FC5, and I liked the story. In fact, last three FCs, to me, had some of the best writing in any games I personally played. They always had a mix of subtlety, commentary, ambiguity, maturity and balance; things are never black and white, and this is most prominent in FC5. They don't force-feed you like most games, don't stuff good/evil clichés down your throat, make you work a bit and don't let you get away completely satisfied after you've murdered a bunch of people.

I honestly don't understand the complaints about FC5's story, mostly because I've never read anyone put together a constructive argument. Even in your post - no negativity intended here on my part, OP - there's no real argument for why you consider the story to be bad, other than it pissed you off. Well, I wouldn't say that's a valid argument if it's just "things didn't go the way I wanted them to go."

Jacob I thought was a really shallow character with no nuance whatsoever.

I actually found him quite interesting and also the most "relatable" as far as events from the real world are concerned. Joseph is a crazy cultist, John his crazy wannabe little bro, Faith is batshit insane, but Jacob is more like guys I feel exist in far larger numbers, today; they're real, they're many and you know the type. I enjoyed listening to his rationale for why believes in this project and what he wants to do.

Also, a lot of the times I wanted to shout at Joshua that all the shit coming out of his mouth applies directly to himself and his actions.

I personally thought that was the point, since this is how most religions/cults operate: they get some parts right yet conveniently ignore others, especially when it's about something they do.
