Thoughts on hidden/limited classes/skills?

They seem like a very strange choice, from a writer's perspective.

If you're aiming for a reader-insert, wish-fulfillment thing, you fail on the grounds that a reader (or at least I) won't believe they could be put in that situation, and be given those same advantages.

If you're aiming for an actually good, cohesive story (which I would say is largely mutually exclusive with typical reader-insert fare), you fail on the grounds that you're obviously just making shit up to prop up your main character.

What it succeeds at is being easy. If you limit everyone (MC included) to the same set of <magic/skills/classes/technology/etc>, you have to actually work to set your MC apart.
