Thoughts on "Wise Blood" by Flannery O'Connor

What I loved about O'Connor is that she is the opposite of what you expect her to be. At first, she comes off as a sweet catholic woman, but by reading anything she has ever written, you see that she is one of the most ruthless writers in American literature. It just seems like she likes writing horrible endings for all of her characters (including Haze).

I think that she does this because of her strong catholic faith. Her beliefs tell her that the only thing that matters in life is to repent from your sins and to give yourself to Jesus, so she uses her work to tell you exactly that. The great thing about her is that she does it in a very tasteful way, and even though her faith is always strong as a rock, she actually tries to create a religious discussion with her amazing writing. This makes her work enjoyable to everybody of any belief.

The only other writer I have read that matches her perfect use of grit, violence, and death is Cormac Mcarthy. The interesting thing is that they both take a lot from Faulkner (not only the southern gothic genre but also from his writing style).
