TIFU by calling the police over a domestic disupute

So, this is what I thought the first time. I understand your skepticism. I was kind of dumbfounded after they left the first time.

The first time the police came the two of them answered the door, but said they were just drunk and got into a fight. The police told me if they can't see any physical marks, and if they both say they weren't fighting, the cops just have to let it be. I suspect that she is, for whatever reason, defending him. Or maybe she's hitting him and he's hitting her back? I don't really know. But I know something is very, very wrong. And when it's so loud I can hear it through walls I feel like I need to at least try to do something.

From what I was able to gather from the mailbox conversation I overheard, she lives with him. It's his place, and she has nowhere to go. After hearing this I realized that maybe I really should just mind my own business. But last night was different. I wasn't just going to sit there and watch this guy, waiting for him to snap and really start to pummel her.

This time they refused to answer the door. The cops could hear they arguing, and they could hear the dog barking, but if they refuse to answer the door there's nothing they can do. They can't hear imminent danger. They have no warrant, no probable cause. Just the eyewitness testimony of a concerned neighbor.

Again, from the officers perspective they just got a call that I had seen two people fighting on the corner. I can't ID either of them. When I go back inside I hear what I suspect are the same people fighting. Again, I can't confirm this 100%. It's possible that there was a fight on the corner and the couple downstairs was a separate issue and they just both sound the same to me. That's *possible. * I know that's not the case here, but I have no tangible way to prove it. It's all circumstantial.
