TIL - The Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet (Jacarepaguá) was destroyed to make way for 2016 Summer Olympics Facilities

Some people are commenting and most have no idea what they are talking about.

The Jacarepagua circuit was slowly abandoned by the CBA(Brazilian Automobilistic Confederation).

The track, who in the 70s and 80s was in the middle of nowhere saw itself in what is now Rio de Janeiros most expesive land per meter.

After F1 left to Interlagos, the circuit only saw decline, it held CART races into the late 1990s and even MOTO GP in until the early 2000s.(I think the last was 2003).

By the 2006 Pan Americana games, city mayor destroyed the circuit building a olympic pool that now stands abandoned. We were only left with part of the track.

By 2012, we still have GT3, Stock car and a few other categories racing there. But the circuit was in horrible condition, the walls that line the circuit are slums and nothing was being done to ensure safety. Parking was unsafe.

We tried all we could, but corrupt goverment sold the land to private constructors to build the 2016 Olympic living quarters on the promise that we would get a new track, on the outskirts of Rio. That has yet to even begin to happen.

The most sad thing is the condition that motor racing has been left in Rio, we have NOTHING. Not even a professional go kart track.

I'm a member of Oktane Forum, they used to organize track days at the track, which now has to be done in other states. The people who ran amateur races were left with useless cars, that noone wants to buy because you have to travel 1500 km to get to a racetrack.

Its horrible. and no, we don't have hundreds of other tracks like someone said. We have a handful, that are far, expensive and that don't organize amateur events.
