TIL In 1995, the Blockbuster video rental chain had more than 4,500 stores. The company made $785 million in profits on $2.4 billion in revenues: a profit margin of over 30 percent. Much of this profit came from "late fees" on overdue rentals

Can confirm, late fees > rental fees, for profit.

Nfw, rental store xxx-section related anecdote

Worked at a video store in high-school, and there would be this one old, disgusting dude that would rent like 3-5 adult movies at a time, which would have a deal like, 4,50$+tx first, then like 3$ the second then every other 1,50$... Then when they're all late, 4,50$ ea, per day. He'd rent them all, never adding extra days ( which are 1 per film, if you add it at the time of rental.)

Said customer would come up the next week or so, with another handful of movies at the register, then the screen pops up "200 +/- $ late fees, must be paid.".... And he'd just casually accept and pay, not making the slightest fuss. He did this ALL THE TIME. Not even exaggerating, pretty much every week, for the 2~ years ish I worked there.

I'm convinced he single handedly (...gross pun?) kept our store going. I've always wondered if he ripped those movies and secretly owned a pirated movie porn site, making a bunch of cash that way, being that I never understood how he could afford or justify spending essentially my salary per month on adult films.
