TIL 24 of the 50 US states have Native American derived names (many through French), 1 is Hawaiian, 4 directly from Spanish, 11 named after people, several of various origins (English, French, Latin), and at least 6 of unknown origin.

I grew up in IL and I was amazed at the number place-names in Washington that have Native American origins and connections. IL seems like nothing. I know maybe one place in a 2 hr radius that is technically a Native American Reservation, but might have 1 store? I'm not up by Chicago.....

I guess if you mean it in the way of "there's so many! This one State alone has so many, let alone all of them!" Then yes, I see what you mean! I can't say I ever thought of Chicago as Native American, but it seems so obvious now that I know! Then again, my cities' mascot is pretty well known for being Native American to the point that I'm not sure we have a mascot anymore. (I've been gone for many years and was never a huge sports fan). But honestly, the influence seemed way stronger over in the West! Especially around the Four Corners, too.
