TIL about the relationship of Joseph Smith, Masonry, and the Temple

The church leaders didn't transfer masonry to Utah, and overall the mormon-masonic connection fell out of favor, and it was mutual for multiple reasons. Masonry was first taken to Utah by Johnston's Army, not by LDS masonic transplants from the midwest.

While we are just fine at looking at things like an inquiry about smoke filled room and a nasty floor as an impetus for the Word of Wisdom, to think that masonic rites served as a spark for revelation on the endowment is somewhat frowned upon for three reasons - 1) for some it can erode Joseph's status as a prophet receiving revelation, and 2) for some it calls into question the actual standing or timeless nature of LDS temple ordinances and 3) we are not disposed to discuss or dissect the details because LDS temple ordinances stay in LDS temples.

By discussing masonic rituals you offend masons, and by discussing LDS rituals you offend LDS, therefore there's no conversation to be had.

That and when you bring up the idea that Joseph Smith sent out masonic signals of brotherhood to his masonic brothers in the mob of assassins in the last moments of his life, you just end up rubbing everyone the wrong way.

So anyways, yeah, Joseph was a mason. Some say he used masonry to better understand the revealed endowment, some say he made up the endowment entirely off of the masonic temple rituals.

It is interesting that many outsiders have made a connection between the Book of Mormon condemning secret combinations and the anti-masonic sentiment flying around New York state in the 1820s, only to see Joseph joining the masons later.
