TIL after 4 years of coming last for amount of tourists in the United States, Nebraska changed their slogan to "Nebraska: Honestly its not for everyone".

Eastern Nebraska is a great place to live, but I can see why they struggle with tourism. The first time I ever saw it was when I moved there with a car full of stuff. There’s also not much going on in the western portion of the state.

Some negatives:

Your friends don’t want to visit you.

It gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter. You’ll get mosquitos and just enough snow that you should think about buying a snow blower.

You might think that you are safe from natural disasters in the Midwest, but Omaha has gotten both a tornado and flooding just in the last few years. At least one town was told they can’t rebuild after the last round of flooding.

Some positives:

Omaha and Lincoln are pretty close (as several others have mentioned) so if you can’t find what you’re looking for in one, you’ll probably find it in the other.

Lots of jobs. Several large companies have large presences in Omaha (TD Ameritrade, Union Pacific, Gallup, to name a few), and I presume that Lincoln has plenty going on as well.

Neither is big enough to have regular traffic jams, so commutes aren’t terrible. It’s also a quick trip into the countryside if you want to get out of the city.

Omaha/Lincoln have a diverse range of delicious local restaurants. I certainly didn’t expect to have some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had in south Omaha, but there it is. There’s all your normal types (tons of steakhouses, burger places, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai) but there’s also some unique stuff (like Ethiopian and a surprisingly good vegan place).

Lots of concerts, both small and large. I was super disappointed when the pandemic hit, as the music scene is actually great here. Tickets are cheap, too!

Definitely some good school districts if you’re raising kids.

Overall? It’s just a really nice place. Don’t tell anyone, I don’t want it to get too crowded.
