TIL Auto-Tune, introduced in 1997, which uses a proprietary device to measure and alter pitch in vocal and instrumental music recording and performances was named one of the 50 worst inventions by Time magazine.

Just to flip it around for a musician’s perspective. It’s like playing a skill-based the game with a cheat code on. Having fun and creating is the goal, but where you’re having fun with the result while the software is making you good, the hard core enthusiast is going back to those notes that they missed and training muscle (yes singing is a lot of muscle memory) and tonal memory to improve their ability to move their voice however they want with whatever colors they want while doing it.

I think people just get annoyed when performers who NEED auto tune are held up as examples (coming for early days T-Swift. She’s put in the work and has great control now.)
