TIL Bernie Sanders sent a letter to Margaret Thatcher in 1981 regarding hunger strikes going on in Ireland(where I live) at the time. This is a horrific part of history that wasn't really that long ago, interesting stuff, for the interested.

Don't worry mate I know all about Bloody Sunday, my grandfather was there alongside many other family friends.

Just to fill you in a bit, because I think you are confused, it was the British Army firing bullets upon the protesters not the literal government, I have no doubt that the British government didn't give a shit but issuing an order to murder citizens in the street is incredibly unlikely and makes no sense. Thankfully some of those soldiers are now receiving some justice courtesy of the British Government - like in the case of Soldier F, IMHO its way too late, but at least it is something.

I also never said I supported or condoned what the British did in the past - every government in the world has blood on their hands. Particularly any country that can trace its History back any more than a few generations. I'm not trying to downplay any actions - to me murder is murder and if you are trying to justify it or rank its necessity by attributing the actions of long dead ancestors who may or may not have committed atrocities you end up on a very slippery slope.
