TIL, Brian Banks did 5 yrs in jail after a high school girl falsely accused him of rape. She also sued the school district & won $1.5m. Yrs later she admitted to him that she lied. He taped the conversation, his conviction was overturned & the school district sued her back for $2.6m

I see most replies are disagreeing quite strongly with your statement, but I think it's a very valid point.

The thing is that for the most part, contrary to what's seen on reddit, the burden of proof for conviction of rape is completely adequate. The judicial system functions as normal, which means that false convictions are inevitable, although hopefully they are as few as humanly possible. You only hear about these cases of wrongful imprisonment because it's been politicised, and particularly on reddit it plays to our views on women and rape.

The fact remains that a woman coming forward with a rape allegation often faces implicit distrust. Of course innocent until proven guilty applies, but this goes far beyond that into the realm of sexism. According to this approximately 68% of rapes are unreported. Society is not hospitable towards rape victims.

The idea that false rape allegations are anywhere near as much of a problem as actual rape is, frankly, ludicrous and indicative of the lack of self awareness of many on this website. Reddit obviously doesn't care about rape or for that matter about false rape allegations, it's more concerned with protecting the self image of the hive mind.

The rape problem is threatening to the young, white males that use this website, because it paints them as the perpetrators for once, instead of the black person, baby boomer, or female that they feel slighted by. They are the true victims in this world, and we are not allowed to forget it.

Jesus fuck reddit. Take a look at yourself. The issues you circlejerk about are things that are only important to your very small demographic. You claim to be this bastion of Logic and Science (TM), but anything that doesn't affect your life directly is totally dumb and political and only distracting from the REAL issues (namely you.)
