Yeah, it's hard on reddit as well with the US/Europe divide being particularly bad with this particular word, it is literally different definitions, akin to football/soccer. Peoples' understanding of the word is very specific.

There is also a whole other debate on how 'social democracy' fits into the socialist tradition and 'is it/isn't it' - not all academics agree and on what characteristics is actually social democratic and/or socialist meaning it becomes a bit subjective at times. SDP is in the Party of European Socialists though so for the time being I'd say they identify with that definition, although it will depend on how people classify socialism.
