TIL for a long while, in Christianity, Satan was not feared. He was more 'comic relief' and the butt of jokes. It was the increased belief in Witchcraft which eventually caused Satan to be feared.

I see where you're coming from. To a devout Christian however, the contradictions that you're talking about with God don't exist. When I was a devout Christian, if I saw a contradiction in God's actions and words, I'd either just accept I don't understand it (Good works in mysterious ways), find a verse that seemingly solves the contradiction, or gloss over it and move on.

Milton was a devout Puritan Christian. I know I'm generalizing, but if he was anything like my experience with Christianity, he wouldn't have seen or accepted that God contradicted Himself. When trying to understand why he wrote the way he did, it's important to keep that in mind I think.
