TIL a greater percentage of Dutch people speak English than Canadians. 90% of Dutch people speak English. Only 85% of Canadians do.

You're French and you want your children to succeed in a world that is growing ever more English. Unless you are wealthy enough to afford private schooling, you kids go to school in French. You have no choice. That is how that is a bad thing.

Lemme check what the rest of the world's tendency is... Huh, surprisingly, almost all countries teach their native language in school! Those absolute madmen!!

That Ramen shop down the street from you? Check the menu again. It has French.

No, it does not. Do you think I brought that point up for no reason?

Well, I absolutely know that you've not tried to register a business in Quebec.

I've registered two, actually. One is my own business and has a French name, the other one I co-own with my step father and has, surprise surprise, an English name!

You settle on a catchy name, say Technika. Try to register that name. "Sorry. That's not a French name. You have to have a French name." You can put whateverthehell you want on your sign, but the official name has to be French ... for some reason.

Again, that's completely untrue. See what /u/cnte posted.

There are so many foreign named businesses in Québec I still don't understand how you can believe this. Off the top of my head, there's Starbucks, Burger King, Bad Monkey, Second Cup, Mex-Hola, Tres Amigos, M-star, Ubisoft, Gearbox, and so many more.

Do I expect the rest of Canada to act the same way with French as Quebec does with English. No, that would be absurd.

I wonder why francophones in the rest of Canada don't bitch about signs only being in English... probably because they understand that it would be counter productive to have the government cater to a minority.

At some point, someone pointed out that all these great jobs were going primarily to Quebecers whereas Albertans and Newfoundlanders never even got considered.

Probably has to do with Quebecers being the most fluent in both OFFICIAL languages. If you don't speak the two official languages, it would be absurd to work at a federal level.
