TIL Microsoft had planned to host multiplayer for Xbox and PC games on the same Microsoft LIVE network. Plans were cancelled after play-testing showed that PC players won virtually every match versus console opponents.

I don't know if we're arguing slightly different things here. The guy I replied to said that "PC gamers are also generally more hardcore" (emphasis mine) - as in, your average PC gamer will be "more hardcore" than your average console gamer. I beg to differ, and think selecting platform to make a generalisation like that is nonsense.

When i said "if you plop both players into a random game" I didn't mean a game of CSS with controllers vs keyboards, I meant if you take any of my friends who spend 4 hours a week on Europa Universalis and put them in Street Fighter against the 5 hours a day FIFA chaps I'd expect the FIFA players to win - to my definition, the FIFA players are "more hardcore" than the EU4 guys because they play more games and are better at games in general. To extend it, if you took someone who played Starcraft 2 frequently on a PC vs someone who owns and has cleared Bayonetta and Dark Souls on console, I'd say the latter is "more hardcore."

I'm not arguing that a controller will beat a keyboard/mouse - it's self evident that it won't. I'm not even arguing that pro-PC players aren't better than equivalently-genre'd pro console players at their own game. I haven't actually mentioned at any point how much I play FPS games (console or otherwise) so it's not really relevant as to whether I think I have more practical experience. Heck, I'm not even flipping it and saying "console players are better at gaming", because that would be as asinine a comment as the one I originally replied to. All I'm saying is that I strongly disagree with the idea that "the average PC gamer is better at x, y or z than the average console gamer," especially when it comes to a genre like fighting games.

I have 6000 hours in a game that's 3 years old. I also stopped playing it 7 months ago.

Separate vein, but firstly why does this matter at all in an argument about the "general" PC gamer, because you're clearly not a general player (in fact, the time you've spent playing games is frankly borderline insane unless it's your day job)? Secondly, I have about 2500-3000 hours hours in Football Manager from FM 2012 to FM 2015. Does this mean I meet your criteria of "hardcore?" I don't think so at all. I never really tweak the settings, I basically play every night while I'm watching Hollyoaks or something, I'm not very good at it. I can tell you a lot about the mechanics, but I'm not on the same par as the PC Sim City maniac who utilizes 100% of the map, but also I'd say I'm not as hardcore as the guy who spends 10 hours a day making Mario Maker maps.
