TIL Morgan Freeman is against Black History Month

The system is racist. The system is perpetuated by white people by normative values, which aren't bad or racist in themselves.

And who are we supposed to trust to accurately and fairly assess the exact structure and parameters of such a system? Surely you realize that anyone who feels oppressed in such a system has an interest in portraying it as more oppressive in the most common terms available.

Think about this: if a norm has racist consequences, despite there being no intent, it is still racist. Consequences matter, especially the unintended ones. Thus, if you support said norms through some other justification, no matter how sincere, that is supporting racism.

This is simply untrue. If someone does not intend to murder someone and by consequence of their unintentional actions, someone is killed, and we can accurately determine that there is no intent to murder, then there was never a murder. It's not still considered a murder.

Calling something Racist, even when there is no intent (what is typically considered when assessing an personal act of racism) to be racist, but who's consequences make a person feel bad based on their race, is simply not Racism being consciously expressed on the part of anyone involved.

You'd have to be doing some serious mental gymnastics just so you get to use the word "Racist" more because people are more afraid of such accusations. They stand at attention when you cry "Racist" and thus this new illiberal mode of critiquing "Structural Racism" gains traction, even though it's fundamentally dishonest at the level of rhetoric.

The real mental gymnastics is white people justifying the status quo as not being anybody's fault.

In addition to such mental gymnastics are those practiced by people who want to portray the status quo as a radically or fundamentally racist one in need of deep reform at the cost of fair treatment of those typically seen as powerful or privileged. It goes both ways.
