TIL 'US Radium' employed women to paint dials of watches with radioactive radium paint. The women were instructed to point their brushes on their lips. This led to many of the workers' losing their jaws and even deaths. Company paid examiners covered it up and claimed they had syphilis.

I think this is a little over simplified and also more of a “hindsight is 20/20” sort of deal. Boeing would not be the only ones involved in an investigation, so Boeing saying it was the pilots fault and that being that isn’t too accurate.

The FAA did not see there being an issue after the first crash either and so the jets were not grounded.

A lot of the data from the initial crash basically pointed to too low of air speed and a stall which led to a crash. The actual issue is that with the Max 8 and 9’s, with the introduction of a new engine and other various structural redesigns, some computer coding was added to help with airspeed when it came to automatically raising and lowering the nose of the plane, normally via autopilot. In certain conditions, this coding can lead to issues when air speed and inclination at takeoff is a “perfect storm”, if you will, and can lead to a crash.

Fixing the computer/coding error was already slated for release in April, if I remember correctly, before the jets were grounded.
