TIL Rotting potatoes give off a noxious gas that can knock a person unconscious & even cause death.

If you're a caveman, there's no way in hell you'll figure out that boiling potatos makes them edible

He'd have suspected they're inedible, because they taste bitter, or sour, because of the glycoalkaloids.

I'm no expect in anthropology, but I think the very earliest 'caveman' wouldn't have boiled anything anyway, because he wouldn't have yet invented a vessel to boil them in. He'd have had baked potatoes, but they would have been tiny tubers earlier than 10,000 years ago, because they'd have been the uncultivated potato, so they'd have cooked a lot quicker.

Of course, we don't know how long humans have been in the Americas, so it could have been that no 'cavemen' discovered potatoes: it could have been later, more sophisticated people, living in whatever huts they'd have had by then. Just saying.

If anyone has more informed information, please contradict me.
