TIL a soldier's home was foreclosed on by his HOA over unpaid dues totalling $800. While he was in Iraq.

Yeah- I came in here to say that there's federal law barring default judgments against people deployed in the military. When you foreclose on a house and you do a dispossessory or whatever kind of action that state has to take possession of the home, you generally have to sign a thing when you apply for the default judgment that the Defendant isn't in the military. So if a military member comes back and he couldn't answer the lawsuit because he was deployed, he'll have the judgment set aside.

Some HOAs have good people in them but my experience is mostly HOAs are a bunch of non-lawyers and non-businesspeople who power trip and don't really understand what they're doing.
