TIL South Park co-creator Trey Parker begged his show's executive producer not to air one South Park episode because he was afraid it would ruin South Park. That episode was "Make Love, Not Warcraft" which received critical acclaim and earned a Primetime Emmy Award.

I don’t like South Park humor and don’t watch it, but I watched that one episode because I’m a long-term Warcraft player. I guess it would have been okay except for the poop scenes, which was disgusting, but I really hate the entire thing because for the next 5-8 years that was the only thing that people talked about (accompanied by hyuk-hyuk type laughs) if I mentioned that I played video games. Since I met my husband through playing WoW, this got old fast. It got to be so bad that we started cutting out that part of our story and just saying that we met through a mutual friend.

The problem was not with the gamers’ reactions but that of non-gamers poking fun without any real knowledge of the community or even bothering to try to understand any aspect of it. Many people seem to find it easier to mock someone than it is to relate.
