The guy who figured that out must have felt so incredibly powerful and smart. Can you imagine? Your whole entire life is this little civilization of Egypt and the entire civilization is built around the annual flood of the Nile — and you a simple mountain shepherd one day put together the various pieces of information and discover that you can predict the flooding and therefore control/predict the agricultural and military fortunes of the ‘world’

And you can do this in a time and place when people literally think the sun is a giant flaming eyeball of a monstrously sized angry deity.
