TIL there is a radio station in New Orleans for the blind. Volunteers every day read the local newspaper on the air, along best-sellers, grocery ads, stories for kids, mysteries, the Wall Street Journal, young adult novels and much more.

I don’t mean to sound ignorant, but is this station really for the blind? Or is it for the illiterate? Either way, I think it’s a good idea, but just wondering if it may have been brought about through some sort of necessity, rather than by chance (I wouldn’t think the amount of blind people in Louisiana would be considered excessive compared to other cities in the US, but literacy stands out). I realize this could be coincidence, but I’m also just a curious guy. If anyone knows, please share. Also, please don’t internet hate me.

[In case anyone thinks I’m being a jerk for suggesting this, I’m not making a baseless claim:

In 2011, research from Loyola University showed that Louisiana’s literacy was 17% and New Orleans was 25%. National average literacy rate in 2011 was 14%.]
