TIL Thomas Jefferson was Deist, the belief that a God created the universe but hasn't interfered with it since.

This is a frustrating misconception. Not only was jesus noted at point as being violent himself towards those using the temple for greed, people seem to think his message was primarily "be nice to one another". However, jesus explicitly made the point that faith and salvation through this was the most important thing, and that love for one another was a natural and purposeful result of this faith. It is also important to note that its pretty explicit within christian scripture that "just being nice" in no way makes up for evil and in no way fulfills jesus's commands. As far as politics goes, christian right tries to say they are justified in whatever they do simply because they believe, which is in error, but neither is jesus some hippie communist their opposition wante you to believe. Ultimately, he stayed out of politics l together, and was primarily concerned the the faith of individuals around him. Don't co-opt his explicitly religious teachings for political goals.
