TIL Time doesn't actually (even perceivably) appear to slow down during life threatening situations - the brain simply makes more dense and detailed memories of the event which makes it seem in retrospect to have lasted longer.

I had a very intense confrontation with two law enforcement officials once. It was not a question of physical danger, they were simply questioning me. This is... I was guilty. They wanted very much to crack me and say I was guilty, and they were using every piece of leverage possible to do so; from threatening to arrest my (completely innocent) girlfriend as an accomplice, to something as petty as calling my parents (I was 26 for god's sake).

I realized I was in a world of trouble. That realization kicked my brain into some sort of crazy overclocked super-analytical mode. As they asked a question, my brain was analyzing what the implications of any of my possible responses could be.

"Where where you 20 minutes ago" was asked. In a split second my brain did the following:

  • "At home" - WRONG, they spoke with your girl and she likely told them you weren't home, bad answer.

  • "By myself at the pool" - WRONG, the pool is in the opposite direction and you clearly came from this direction and you don't have a bathing suit or wet hair or a towel to dry with.

  • "At the bar". - WRONG, it would be too easy for them to confirm or deny you were there since a bar employee or patron would remember me.

  • "Riding my bike" - WRONG, if they go to up to our place, they'll see the bike has a flat tire and dust on it and hasn't been ridden in months.

  • "At the park" - BINGO! There are no cameras at the park to check, and anyone that was there 30 minutes ago will be gone by now. It is in the correct direction and it can't be disproved I was there.

My brain actually thought every word I wrote above and less than a split second, formulated a cool and casual response and delivered it without hesitation and in a calm tone.

Later, after I had calmed down, I ruminated on how crazy fast my brain and perception were functioning in the short period of time. It felt almost superhuman.

Also, NEVER TOUCH MY WEED, EVER.
