TIL that when 13-year-old Ryan White got AIDS from a blood donor in 1984, he was banned from returning to school by a petition signed by 117 parents. An auction was held to keep him out, a newspaper supporting him got death threats, and his family left town when a gun was fired through their window.

Disagree strongly. I serve on a board and I can assure you that people do have morals. It is not cartoonish villainy or some bizarre stereotype like you’re referring to. We are very abstracted away from the day to day stuff and more thinking about longer term strategy.

The biggest problem is the push for short term growth. A lot of issues happen when these short term results are prioritized over everything else, and it is out of control within the American system. Most “evil corporation” stuff can be described in terms of prioritizing short term results over long term growth.

The American system kills companies, which is part of the issue as well, and Americans pride themselves at weeding out weak players. However, a corporation is an organism and when faced with death, it will grasp at any short term results to prolong its life.

CEOs only last on average 1.8-3 years before they are fired so they can absolutely be too focused on the short term results.

Perhaps someday you’ll get to be part of a profit or nonprofit board and get to see it firsthand.
